The largest city in Brazil with a population of 11 million, almost double if counting the larger metropolitan region.  Founded in 1711 it quickly became a thriving center for the coffee trade.  It maintained a strong level of growth up until the early 20^th century when the stock market crash affected the commodities markets of Brazil.

Growth resumed later in the 20^th century as the city began to attract increasing attention from multinational corporations looking to open their South American headquarters in the city.  The boom has enabled employment and wages to increase dramatically over the last few decades.  Sao Paulo today is a sprawling metropolis that fiercely rivals Brazil’s other major city, Rio de Janeiro.
